Manchester United is considering the prospect of joining the race to sign Benfica’s Goncalo Guedes who is also on the radar of Arsenal FC.
Guedes is regarded as one of the highly talented attacking players in the Benfica set-up; he has been linked with various clubs over the last few months. Valencia would have signed him for £30million had it not been for the financial difficulties faced by the Spanish club.
Arsenal is also looking at Guedes as a potential replacement for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is contemplating the idea of leaving the Gunners at the end of the season.
The England international’s contract will expire in the summer of 2018 and he is considering his relevance with the Gunners. Arsene Wenger has substituted him in 27 out of the last 34 league games, raising concerns over his future at the club.
Arsenal is not the only club interested in signing the attacker. His agent, Jorge Mendes who is also the agent of Manchester United Manager, has played a key role in bringing Portuguese based players to the premier league. It would not be a surprise if Manchester United succeeds in signing him
Guedes came through the ranks at Benfica and he has been with the club throughout his career. His contract will run till the summer of 2021 with a £40million buy-out-clause.
Though different clubs are interested in Guedes, Benfica is in the process of offering the attacker a new deal with a bigger release clause. He made his debut for the Portugal national team in 2015 but has not been able to add to his two appearances.
Manchester United were expected to sign central defenders in this January transfer window due to the absence of Eric Bailey, but since the team has been performing well defensively, it looks like Mourinho has switched his attention to Goncalo Guedes.
