Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Phillipe Coutinho may not be 100% fit for the crunch clash against Manchester United.
Jurgen Klopp is willing to use Wednesday’s EFL cup semi-final fixture against Southampton as an indication to understudy Coutinho’s fitness level and performance.
Coutinho sustained an ankle injury against Sunderland on November 26 and he has been out of action since that time.
Klopp conceded his star player will not be fit, but will try everything to make sure he features against United.
“The time is too short for him to be 100% fit for Manchester United but he could feature,” Klopp said. “There is a big difference between being fit and being match fit, but he is a special player so we want to do everything to make sure he is 100%”.
“At the moment, it makes sense for him to feature against Southampton and we will see what happens. We will access his fitness and by Wednesday morning a decision will be made”
Coutinho’s performance this season has attracted interest from both Barcelona and PSG, but Klopp insist Coutinho is not for sale.
“It will be nice if big clubs can forget about Coutinho, he has been injured for about six weeks now” the German said.
“We are not considering any offer because he is our player and we have no intention of selling him for any price.
“These should be aware that he is injured, yet they remain persistent and are making repetitious requests about him. It shows that his quality has not reduced despite his injury”.
Meanwhile, Coutinho’s compatriot Roberto Firmino was arrested for drinking driving and is due to appear in court on January 31. His manager has however praised him for his on-field display.
“It has been difficult for him but he has dealt with it really well on the pitch. When he is on the pitch, he thinks about football only,” Klopp added.
