Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has urged Arsene Wenger to sign a player like the injured Santi Cazorla when the transfer window opens in January.
The Spanish international injured his Achilles in mid-October and he has been out of action since then. In other to cure the problem once and for all, Cazorla underwent an operation earlier this month and he will not be back until early next year.
The Gunners have plenty of choice to pick from in midfield with players like Francis Coquelin, Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Eleny all available for selection.
However, none of these players is as creative as Santi Cazorla and thus they may find it difficult to replace him.
Wenger is not showing any interest in getting involved in any transfer this January, but Parlour has asked that his former boss should consider signing a player like Cazorla.
When asked about the type of player Arsenal should sign next month, he said:
“You look at that (Santi) sort of player in midfield. You might say (Jack) Wilshere’s out on loan at Bournemouth and Aaron Ramsey who’s injured at the moment.
“They do miss him, that calming factor in the midfield area. He can see a pass, very good on the ball, influential going forward.”
Ray Parlour also added that assuming he was Arsenal’s manager, he would hand Cazorla an automatic place in the midfield. However, he noted that Arsenal’s current pairing of Granit Xhaka and Francis Coquelin is the right choice at the moment.
“If Cazorla was fit, he would play and it would be (Granit) Xhaka or (Francis) Coquelin alongside him and then Theo Walcot (on the right) has been in good form this year, then you would play Ozil.
“Then it’s a tossup between (Alex) Iwobi and (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“I think Cazorla is a genius in midfield, keeps it ticking over, linked up with Ozil on occasions, a very good footballer but he’s injured obviously so I think at the moment they have the right two pairing in Xhaka and Coquelin and I think Carzola will add that little more craft in there if he was fit”
