Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to a new contract with Spanish giant, Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid made the announcement recently that it had extended the Portugal international’s contract till 2021.
Ronaldo signed the agreement at an event held at the Santiago Bernabeu in the presence of Florentino Perez, the club president, and other top officials.
Ronaldo’s current contract was due to end by June 2018 after he extended his first contract in March 2013. The new contract will make Ronaldo play for Real Madrid till he clocks 36 and he would have spent 12 years in Madrid.
Florentino Perez handed Ronaldo a customized Jersey with his name on it and the number 2021, which indicates the year the contract will expire. He joined Real Madrid in a world record transfer in 2009, but he still believes this is not his last contract.
Ronaldo thanked the club and fans at a press conference after the ceremony.
“Though I have renewed my last contract for the next five years this wouldn’t be my last,” Ronaldo said.
“I believe I can play till 41, to win more laurels for Real Madrid”.
“I would like to thank my teammates, real Madrid president, the club and all those who have helped me to reach the stage I am.” “Today is an important day for me, and as I have said before, I carry this club in my heart.”
Meanwhile, Florentino Perez has defended Ronaldo’s contract. He hailed Ronaldo as a living legend at the press conference.
“You have won everything at this club, a living legend, and the highest goals scorer,” Florentino Perez said at the news conference.
“You are a unique footballer, one of a kind; you have been consistently scoring over 50 goals in the past six seasons. I believe you deserve to win a fourth Ballon d’Or.
