Edison Cavani scored his 100th goal in all competition for Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in a Ligue 1 win over Angers. The Uruguayan international scored a penalty kick in their 2-0 victory over Angers to reach the milestone.
Cavani joined PSG in a big-money move in 2013 from Napoli but was deployed on the flanks due to the presence of Swedish international striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who occupied the number 9 position.
After the departure of Ibrahimovic to Manchester United at the end of last season, the number 9 position shifted to Cavani. Despite his form, some fans still doubt the ability of Cavani to help establish PSG as European heavyweights.
Thiago Silva opened the scoring for PSG with an excellent header in the first half, just moments after denying Cheik Ndoye the opener with a goal-line clearance. After the first goal, PSG failed to create any tangible goalscoring chances, although Lucas Moura fired wide after a brilliant work down the right, while Ben Arfa’s appeal for a penalty was not granted.
PSG recorded another goal in the 66th minute when the referee awarded a penalty against Thomas for a clumsy challenge on Ben Arfa inside the area. Edison Cavani stepped up to take the penalty, and he made no mistake from 12 yards.
Paris Saint-Germain trainer, Unai Emery, praised his exceptional striker for scoring his 14th goal of the season which placed PSG in the second position on 35 points.
“Cavani was in the shadow of a player like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and he was playing on the wing, now he can lead the line, Emery told reporters.
The 29-year-old is now in Joint third position in PSG’s all time highest goal scorers with Dominique Rocheteau, only Pauleta and Ibrahimovic are ahead with 109 and 156 goals respectively, he is indeed on his way to making history for the club.
